Mermaids, along with other mythical creatures, have long been of interest to people. I wonder what they would be like outwardly if they actually existed? American scientist D. Shaw made an attempt to answer this question.
Д. Shaw suggested that the mermaids living on coral reefs, would have colorful patterns on the scales and skin, which would serve as camouflage and at the same time a means of communication with relatives. They would also be small enough to hide from danger in local plants.
Creatures living in the open ocean would move in groups, their bodies would be smooth and their muscles would be strong. At the same time, their backs will acquire a dark color, and the parts of the body that face the bottom – light to complicate the task of predators. These creatures will be sociable and extremely fast.
Polar mermaids will have stores of subcutaneous fat in their bodies, and their coloring will be closer to white so that predators can’t easily spot them. They’ll also be the slowest of them all to conserve energy in the icy water.
