Humans have caused 7 times more mercury in the atmosphere in the last 500 years

Volcanoes are the largest natural sources of mercury, but measuring their emissions to the atmosphere has so far proved difficult. The researchers used sulfur dioxide emissions instead of Hg to estimate past volcanic mercury emissions. Using an atmospheric model, the scientists were also able to track the movement of mercury emissions in the atmosphere.

The experts hope that their new methodology will help to better understand the human impact on the environment in regions with active volcanoes.
